How To Edit

The Ear of the Behearer is built on the same Wiki software that powers the Wikipedia. In order to add pages or edit existing pages, you'll need to learn a little bit about the 'wikitext' markup that's used. Fortunately, for most uses, there's not a lot to learn, and it's significantly easier to learn than other ways to write for the web.

Making things even easier is a simple editing toolbar that will be displayed on the page whenever you are changing a page's contents.

Discography Info

Each album page should use the following template for data entry:

Artist: artist name

Year: year

Label: label name

Tracks
<!-- TODO: Add Track listing, delete this comment -->

<!--
# Track name
# Track Name
-->

Personnel
<!-- TODO: Add Personnel listing, delete this comment -->

<!--

* Name: instrument(s)
* Name: instrument(s)

-->

After entering this information, please also navigate to the appropriate artist, year, and label pages and enter cross-reference links to this album so that it can be found starting from any point.

Discussion Pages

The Wikipedia has a very strongly enforced policy that maintains a Neutral Point of View; edits can be rejected on the basis of advocating a position too strongly.

The Ear of the Behearer has no such policy; the whole point of this site is to provide a place for a reappraisal of a period in Jazz history that's been unfairly maligned for too long. Neutrality is fine on the discography pages, but just behind each page there's a separate 'discussion' page, where the meat of the interaction on the site is going to happen.

Edit Summary

When you make an edit to a page, please be sure to take an extra second to fill in the 'Summary' box with a brief description of what was changed on the page. This information will be displayed on the Special:RecentChanges page, and will be useful to everyone following the site on a regular basis.

Sign Your Work

When you make a contribution to the site, please standa behind your work. The wiki software makes this really easy to do. You can either click the toolbar button that adds your signature with a timestamp, or (if the toolbar isn't visible) enter the equivalent markup by hand, which is entered as --~~~~ (Note that the '~' key is located on US keyboards immediately to the left of the '1' key on the top row).

Your signature is shown on the wikified output as:

--BgPorter 09:58, 17 October 2006 (EDT)
