Sonny Clark Memorial Quartet

A tribute to the 1950s/1960s hard bop pianist Sonny Clark, by players who (with the exception of bassist Drummond) were at the time largely associated with the downtown New York avant-garde scene. Despite this, the band mostly plays the tunes in a straightfoward hard bop manner, though with a few idiosyncracies (Zorn's fondness for animal-like squeals and screams occasionally breaks through).
Horvitz originally had hoped to have bassist George Duvivier, who had played with Clark, perform on the album, but Duvivier unfortunately passed away before the recording. This album was one of the earliest signs of a revaluation of Clark's somewhat overlooked legacy which has continued in subsequent decades.
Zorn continued exploring Clark's compositions, along with the tunes of other Blue Note-associated players, on News for Lulu and More News for Lulu.
